North Texas Medical Center in Gainesville has announced that they have opened a post-acute care Skilled Nursing Unit as of Aug. 1.
A Skilled Nursing Unit, or Swing Bed Unit as it is sometimes referred to, offers several benefits to patients who are ready to transition out of hospital acute care, but not quite ready to continue their recovery at home.
“We are very excited to re-open our Swing Bed Unit,” said NTMC Chief Nursing Officer Bonnie Hess. “We feel this will be a valuable addition to our hospital, patients and community.”
Among the biggest benefits of post-acute skilled nursing is the convenience it offers to patients. They can receive skilled nursing and rehabilitation services in their own community, close to friends and support networks. Another benefit is the improved quality of care. Swing bed therapy provides patients with a higher level of care than they would receive at home.
Increased independence is another benefit. Swing beds help patients regain their independence and return to their daily activities as quickly as possible. It also offers the opportunity to socialize with other patients and participate in activities that promote their physical, mental and emotional well-being. Swing beds also provide patients and their families with peace of mind knowing that they are receiving high-quality care in a safe and supportive environment.
NTMC’s program will offer many customized services to fit the patient’s specific needs. A patient’s physician will determine the services needed which may include skilled nursing, physical therapy and rehabilitation, speech therapy, respiratory therapy, social services and spiritual care.
Currently, Medicare covers 100 percent of the cost up to 20 days in the Skilled Nursing Unit. Additional days may be covered at a lesser rate. Other insurance providers may cover or reimburse program costs. However, you should speak to your insurance company to learn more about your options.
