The CDC recommends a general standard of developmental milestones for children. Not all children are going to meet these milestones perfectly. Parents who have concerns about their children either not meeting these milestones should speak to their doctor. A child gains certain abilities at various ages, and these abilities are benchmarks for the parents and doctors to monitor to ensure their child is growing normally.
Well Child Visits/Sports Physicals
Well child visits occur frequently from birth to the age of 3, and then yearly up to the age of 21. If a child becomes ill or develops other medical problems, additional doctor visits may be necessary in between the well visits. Well child visits are essential to the health of your child and to ensure that they receive the highest quality care. If your child requires a sports or school physical form to be filled out, please bring these with you to your appointment and let your doctor know that there are forms to be completed. These well child visits will allow your child’s provider to:
- Track your child’s growth and development. This is done through measurements of height, weight, blood pressure, vision and hearing screens, a physical exam, and any other testing that may be necessary.
- Address new or existing health concerns
- Prescribe medications if any are needed
- Track and administer essential vaccinations
- Develop an optimal assessment and treatment for physical, mental, and social issues
- Develop a lasting and trusting relationship between your child and their doctor
Vaccines and Immunizations
While we know there is a lot of vaccine hesitancy these days, vaccines save lives and have drastically decreased childhood mortality from certain diseases. The American Association of Pediatrics (AAP) strongly endorses all children to be vaccinated, and a lot of information can be found on the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) website. For the recommended childhood vaccine schedule, and information about each vaccine, please visit the CDC website. With the COVID-19 pandemic, it is now more important than ever to get your child vaccinated.
Acute/same day sick visits
Our pediatrician and family nurse practitioners are available during office hours to set parents’ minds at ease. An acute or same day sick visit can usually be scheduled the day of or the following day for any immediate issues. These common childhood illnesses can include, but are not limited to:
